INTRODUCTION
MATTIE Gokey can’t forget the promise she had mae to her dying mother- a promise to stay on in the family farm and help raise her three little sisters. The trouble is that keeping her word would mean an end to all her dreams. The story is set in a peaceful little village atmosphere. It is based on letters Mattie gets from a woman named Grace Pool, who was killed by the man she loved. SUMMARY IN BRIEF
Chicken to feed, cows to milk, sisters to take care of………16 – year – old Mattie had to do the major share of word on her dad’s farm, because she had promised that to her dying mother. But she was an intelligent girl who wanted to go to college and write books. She learns hard, along with her friend Weaver and gets admitted to college, but she has no money to pay. The love affair with Royal Loomis peeks into the story too. In order to earn money for her family and for her college boarding, she goes to work in a hotel. There she meets a girl, Grace pool, who gives her some letters to burn. The next day, she was found drowned. Matie , out of curiosity reads those letters and uncovers the truth. Grace Pool was pregnant; her loverkilled her to keep that a secret. Mattie’s whole world turns up side down. Each of Grace’s words moves her. She takes a big decision. She gives away all the money she had earned so far to her father and her friends and goes on to achieve her dream- Mattie Gokey goes to college.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS
Jennifer Donnelly’s “a Northern light” plays with the reader’s heart. The story begins with Mattie working in hotel Glenmore and the discovery of Grace Pool’s death. Through Grace’s letters, Mattie recalls scenes from her own life and we meet her family, Royal, Miss Willcox and the other characters. The author is able to express the thoughts of a 16-year-old –girl to perfection. The readers are on the edge of curiosity as Mattie reads each of these letters. But when they are pushed back to Mattie’s life, they relax and enjoy the village background.the readers move to and fro from Grace’s to Mattie’s life. Jennifer Donelly has done a really appreciable work in this story.
