3.1.5 Practice: Hawks and Doves | Practice Assignment |
U.S. History since the Civil War
Choose three quotations from the list. Create a table for each of the quotations with the following:
1. Choose and write down a quotation from the list provided.
2. Write whether the opinion expressed was that of a hawk or a dove.
3. Think about and explain the meaning of the quotation. What opinion about the Vietnam War was expressed in the quotation?
4. Finally, what is your opinion of this position? Write whether you agree or disagree with the quotation and tell why.
Quotation #1: |
“Should I become President . . . I will not risk American lives . . . by permitting any other nation to drag us into the wrong war at the wrong place at the wrong time through an ...view middle of the document...
Quotation #2: | “If in order to avoid further Communist expansion in Asia and particularly in Indo-China, if in order to avoid it we must take the risk by putting American boys in, I believe that the executive branch of the government has to take the politically unpopular position of facing up to it and doing it, and I personally would support such a decision.”— Future president Richard Nixon, 1954 |
Hawk or Dove? | Hawk |
Meaning of the Quotation: |
Richard Nixon ordered to send soldiers to fight communism and sent soldiers to fight against them and plant democracy even if it meant risking young American lives. |
Your Opinion/ Analysis: | I don’t agree with Nixon. No one should have to risk their own lives over an issue that doesn’t concern them. |
Quotation #3: | “We seem bent upon saving the Vietnamese from Ho Chi Minh, even if we have to kill them and demolish their country to do it . . . . I do not intend to remain silent in the face of what I regard as a policy of madness which, sooner or later, will envelop my son and American youth by the millions for years to come.” — Presidential candidate George McGovern, 1967 |
Hawk or Dove? | Dove |
Meaning of the Quotation: | Society wanted to “save them from communism" even though they were causing more destruction than good. America was supposed to save them from communism, yet we went in with our troops killing their people, destroying their land and leaving it in worse condition than when they arrived. |
Your Opinion/ Analysis: | I agree with Mcgovern, this was madness. Anyone who thought that attacking them and destroying their country was helping them was not thinking clearly. |
What You Turn In
You will turn in the three tables you created, each one demonstrating that you can understand and discuss part of American public opinion of the Vietnam War.
