To
confirm windtunnel data, Avro used
Free Flight models mounted to NIKE rocket boosters. They
were fired over Lake Ontario during the 1950's. CARDE supervised
the launching of the 1/8th scale models.
The data
obtained was applied to the full size aircraft in production.
11 models in total were tested in this manner.
